Any news?
A few weeks since meeting our lawyers, not much has happened. Last week I returned from a walk with our dog when the neighbor left his property via the easement road on his motorbike. When he spotted me, he burst into a made-up loud laugh. Then he turned left onto the asphalt and repeated the laugh. He probably looked around first to verify that no other neighbors were out and see him make a fool of himself. Note that he was wearing a helmet, and I was 25 meters away; he was probably laughing his lungs out – all for the good cause, I suppose.
Showstopper
Today, we received the concept letter to be sent to the neighbors. In short: it was great! Apart from the usual ‘…stop doing…or we’ll see you in court…’ language, the letter held what can best be described as an easer egg. Note that it is the second day of Easter as I write this. I’ll fill y’all in on the details of this easter egg, but it’s a beauty, a real showstopper. We read it thoroughly and had no trouble approving it. It’ll probably be mailed tomorrow and has to be signed for by the recipient. As usual with this kind of ‘cease and desist’ letters, there’s a deadline, and a promise (not a threat) to escalate however we deem suitable, if not addressed in time. Considering the Easter egg, I’d be very punctual if I was the defendant!
But what about the easter egg? you may wonder. I promise to fill you in on that later, but I promise that it is worth waiting for!

With the deadline in the letter set at eight days, the neighbors took it slow and decided to hire legal support. We got a response from their lawyer two and a half weeks after sending our letter. Without explaining why, they requested a delay until the middle of may, still about three weeks away. Obviously, neither our lawyer nor we agreed to that; delay seems to be the go-to tactic on the other side.
Now, again, we wait…
Editor’s comment:
As always, the above is an as-exact-as-I-can representation of the facts as we experienced them, and not fancied up in any way. It is not derived from any of my books, though the longer this goes on, the more I’m tempted to have it end up in one I may write in the future.
