Previously, I ranted about the US bomb attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities spread over several installations and deep under the ground. You can read more about that here. In the aftermath, the operation became questionable, as did its alleged results.
Reports by the US administration, foreign affairs, and the DOJ praised the operation, calling it a huge success that wiped out the complete Iranian uranium enrichment program that set the Iranian nuclear ambition back years.
Is that so?
Perhaps the claims made by the USA government are correct. However, more likely, they are not. Since Iran is not allowing independent inspectors into the country, let alone on-site, there’s no way of establishing the effects of the bombing.
Motivation:
- The underground structures are not known.
No plans for the structures have been revealed. - The quality of the underground structures is not known.
Iran is capable of building very high-quality concrete structures. We may assume these structures are built with top-of-the-line concrete. - We do not know how deep these structures are.
Again, we have not seen the plans. - We do not know exactly where these structures are.
We assume the structures are under the entrance. Anticipating that, the designers may have designed the entrance not to be above the structures at all by digging sideways and down instead of only down. - Unable to inspect.
With no access, the USA and International Nuclear Inspection Authorities (IAEA) cannot blindly assume the installations were a total loss. - Warning from the USA weeks ahead of the bombing. With the several weeks’ interval from the first announcement to the actual strike on Iran, there was plenty of time for Iran to prepare for them. They knew the most likely target and knew it was coming shortly. What are the odds of Iran quietly waiting to see what would happen?
In short:
In his 1st term, trump left the nuclear agreement with Iran and reinstated sanctions. The Biden administration made steps to improve relations and return to a situation where the nuclear installations could be inspected. Directly in the beginning of his 2nd term, trump once again made sure to create a status bordering on war between Iran and the USA. The bombing merely confirmed that status.
This is the status we have today, end 2025, and likely will have for decades to come, as Iran is unlikely to trust Western powers such as the USA. As the EU leadership sat on its hands during the exercises described above, the EU is unlikely to become a trusted partner.
